There have been a number of Berks I vs Berks II non league matchups this year. None was more anticipated than when Berks Catholic was to face off with Exeter Twp. Both teams entered Saturday’s “brunch” matchup with just two defeats. The Saints stepped on the accelerator out of the blocks and never looked back. Berks Catholic earned an important road win 56-41 over Exeter Twp.
Senior Tre Dabney did not miss a shot on his way to a game high 19 points for BC. Good news for the Saints was Luis Garcia’s 11 points. Luis was coming back to the line up following an injury. The interior performance of Keba Mitchell was outstanding. Keba blocked and rebounded Exeter out of the paint. Mitchell also held Exeter’s outstanding Center Riley Dobraniecki without a field goal for the entire game. Exeter had another sold performance by Alex Javier and his team leading 14 points.
Exeter was coming off a tough emotional win on Friday night. So it was not surprising the Eagles had a bit of a slow start to this early afternoon start. But before you knew it Berks Catholic was up 7-0 and just kept pouring it on. Exeter was able to mount a late first quarter run but BC held a 17-8 lead. Exeter got to within 5 with 6:00 to go until half and got no closer for the rest of the game. The Saints D clamped down and led to some fast break opportunities. At the half BC led Exeter 29-16.
The Berks Catholic fast break and Exeters scoring woes continued after the break. Midway through the quarter the Saints opened up a 23 point lead and held a 48-26 advantage at the end of the third. BC was up 25 midway through quarter four and both teams began to empty the benches. The final was Berks Catholic 56 Exeter Twp. 41.
The 8-3 Saints are at Hamburg Tuesday. Exeter hosts Reading High Tuesday.
