6A Quarter Finals @ Crest
Feb. 21, 2020

Mid Penn Champ vs the LL Champ. Should be a good one, yes? YES!

Crest got down early only to put together a 12-2 third quarter to take a lead going into the fourth. CD battles back to take a 2-point lead early in the 4th and game on!

Brief wrap
The Bird’s Nest was very crowded and very loud. Both fan bases got after it chanting at the others. Nothing nasty just some back and forth—“we can’t hear you” was the standard- but would swing back and forth as the game would swing.

Crest ran out to a 4-0 lead early. CD would come back to cut it to 4-3. Crest’s Jason Eberhart, 6’7” sn, would score back-to-back in the post- 8-3 Crest. The Rams would score the next 7 points – capped off by a three ball by top scorer, Ryan Smith, 6’2” jn. The quarter ended 10-8 CD.

The second quarter saw the Rams get up early and hold the lead going into the half. CD went on a 8-2 run in the first half of the quarter. Ileri Ayo-Faleye, 6’7” sn, was on the bench due to 2 quick fouls (after the game Coach Smith told us that Ileri said he could play thru—Coach Smith took him out). Crest would only score 7 points in the quarter and the Rams would take advantage of 4 Crest turnovers and one less shot blocker on the defensive end. A sweet layup by Donovan Hill, 6’7” soph, was delivered by a dime from Tyrese Fuller, 6’4” sn. The Rams lead 24-15 at the break.

The third quarter proved to be a major key to the game. CD was very patient on the offensive end- running off 45-30 seconds at a clip. The Falcons stood their ground, even though they gave up 5 offensive boards in the period. Crest would grind away on the offensive end (Coach Smith said they wanted to run the ball up). Crest would score the first 6 points capped by a foul shot by Ileri. (Not sure how to describe the action except that it was intense) With every basket the Falcons scored, the gym got louder and louder. The Rams would finally score on a drive by Rance Russo, 6’4” sn, at the 2:05 mark. An Ileri drive would put the Falcons up 27-26 going into the 4th.

CD would take a brief lead on a three-ball by Darrien Berrios at 31-29 at about the 7 minute mark. Crest’s bigs went to work – Ileri drive and an Eberhart post move moved the lead to 33-31. Enter Trey Shutter. Shutter was seeing his first playing time in 2 weeks- was a bit rusty in the first half but 2 drives by the 6’1” sn, put the Falcons up 37-31 at the 5:40 mark. Over right? Nah. CD would score the next 5 points as the Falcons outside shooting went cold. Eberhart post, followed up by a made foul, and a key bucket by Cole Miller put Crest up 42-38. CD posted Smith, pressed the Falcons into 2 turnovers, although the Rams would only score 1 point off the turnovers. With Crest up 44-41, the Rams missed a long range shot only to see Justice Easter get a big time follow and a foul. 44-43 at the :07. Easter would miss the foul, but the Rams still had a chance to tie. Ileri made 1 of 2 from the line- 45-43. CD got the ball 5.5 ticks left. They got the ball up to half court, called time. 2.7 seconds…Crest gave a foul…2.0 seconds. Crest clamped down on CD’s outside shooters- the Rams threw the ball over the top only to see seldom used (like 2.7 seconds worth) Matt Smith, 6’3” jn , come up with a block at the end of the game- all ball for sure.

Sidelines…I sat way up high tonight- got some pretty good long view clips…Very loud gym…Lines outside waiting to get in but everyone got in and there were no major issues at the game…Refs had the volleyball round cover taped down before the game….Lots of press- so lots of picts, stories and clips…Crest plays at Wilson Tues at 7 in the semi’s…CD plays McCaskey at CD in the playback round…Crest clinches a PIAA berth…Wilson scouts said they were following Andy tonight..and they loved our site 🙂
