Cedar Crest is hitting its stride, just in time for an LL playoff push. The LS Pioneers are almost a lock for an LL spot in Section 3 (they play Octorara Friday night for first place – LLhoops live stream game). The Falcons used its depth on the defensive end and popped some early threes to pull away with the win. Coach Tommy Smith credited Crest’s defense for the win. The remaining games for Crest will determine whether or not they get into the LL’s and District 3 tournaments. LS is playing for another LL Section 3 title and the all important home court advantage in the districts.

Cedar Crest has struggled a bit from distance earlier in the year. However, tonight the Falcons nailed 3 triples (J’Veon Reyes-Vega, Fernando Marquez, and Owen Chernich) in the first period. LS countered with 7 points by Luke Hines, 6’3” sn, via drives and post moves. The Falcons put together back-to-back buckets late in the second by drives from Danny Speaks and Leo Tirado. The period ended 17-13 in favor of Crest.

The Pios tied the game early in the second on a banker three-ball by Yasin Abdi, 6’ jn. A Chase Smucker 3 and a Hines foul shot put LS up 24-22 at the 4:34 mark. Crest would string together a 10-2 run to take control of the game late in the second. LS scored the last 4 points (Judah White fouls and a Smucker drive) to end the scoring. 32-30 Crest at the break.

The Falcons locked down the ‘D’ in the third. They held LS to 6 points in the quarter. Crest also started to dominate on the boards by getting multiple shots on many of the possessions of the third. After the Pios cut the lead to 3 at 37-34 on a Smucker drive, Crest went on another 10-2 to take a commanding lead into the 4th at 47-36.

LS tried some trapping in the 4th. However, the Falcons found players cutting to the bucket for some easy scores. Crest started the 4th on an 8-1 run, the last being a drive by Chernich. Crest was up 55-37 with 4:50 and at that point it was just a matter of what the final score would be. Both benches emptied with about 3 minutes to go.

LS- Luke Hines 19, Chase Smucker 11
Cedar Crest – Fernando Marquez 14, Leo Tirado 12, Danny Speaks 9
