Chase Smucker (Lampeter-Strasburg) Earns 2025 All-State 5A Second Team Recognition From Pennsylvania Sportswriters

Written by: Andy Herr on May 4, 2025

For the 11th consecutive year, a Lancaster-Lebanon League boys basketball player had his name revealed as a member of the Pennsylvania Sportswriters’ All-State Team.

On Sunday, Chase Smucker, Lampeter-Strasburg’s senior guard bound for Bloomsburg, was the latest in a long line of L-L players that have received all-state distinction. In doing so, the all-time leading scorer in L-S program history joins the likes of Ty Burton, a first-team 5A selection in 2022, Seth Beers, a 5A third teamer in 2020, and Ryan Smith, a fellow second-team 5A honoree in 2018, as the fourth Pioneer to gain membership into the exclusive statewide club in the last decade which makes L-S the L-L League program with the second-most individual honorees behind Lancaster Mennonite within that same timeframe.

Beyond exploding for a personal 50-point showing against Northern York in the opening round of this year’s District 3-5A tournament, the first time an L-L player hit 50 points in a game in 15 years, Smucker scored in double figures in every game during the 2024-25 season including going over the 20-point mark 13 times, and four times going northward of 30 points during his senior campaign this year.

Aside from Smucker, Lancaster County was also well represented by Linville Hill, the 2A state champion, as Stephen Smucker took home 2A Player of the Year honors, head coach Mike Schatzmann securing 2A Coach of the Year distinction, and Giovanni Sejuste revealed as a fellow first-team 2A statewide selection.

Not to be outdone, Jerry Johnson Jr, arguably the most talented player hailing from Lancaster County in totality, nabbed himself second team 1A distinction as La Academia’s junior guard, already reportedly garnering recruiting interest from Power 4 conference programs, received the most votes from anyone in the 1A class absent of the first-team honorees.

The full list of this year’s All-State teams is listed below (with players mentioned in bold) along with the L-L’s current string of all-state honorees dating back to 2015.
