Lady Comets Advance to District 2 Semi-Finals

Girls 5A Quarter-Final:  Abington Heights 46, Dallas 38

CLARKS SUMMITAbington Heights grabbed a 20-point lead midway through the third period (33-13) after a steal and layup by Madison Zalewski.  That advantage was built mostly from a 10+ minute scoring drought by Dallas in the first half.  But, the Lady Mountaineers persevered getting a gutsy performance from Molly Walsh scoring 11 of her 19 points in the final period, as they inched their way back cutting it to a two possession game.  Unfortunately, time was not on their side as the Lady Comets advanced, 46-38, to advance to the District 2 Girls 5A semi-finals with a visit to #2 seed Wallenpaupack on Saturday evening.

The first quarter would be a tight game throughout with four ties.  Peyton Houlihan got things going two minutes into the game with a short jumper.  Molly Walsh would tie it up at 2 with a pair of free throws.  Teams then traded triples over the next minute (Mia DelGaudio for Dallas and Caroline Murray for AH) before Walsh and Murray scored to knot it up at 7.  Houlihan would get another layup before Molly Walsh converted a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left in the period.  Madeleine Walsh would give Abington Heights an 11-9 edge after eight minutes.

The Lady Comets got triples from Zalewski and Murray to extend their lead to 17-9 at the 5:41 mark.  After AH got a free throw following a technical call on a Dallas player, Houlihan would notch back-to-back scores to elevate their lead to 13 points.  Dallas would get blanked in the second frame as AH completed a 14-0 run with Zalewski scoring in the lane to end the first half, 25-9.

Abington Heights would get a smooth scoop layup from Coleman to start the second half.  The Lady Mounts scoring drought finally ended as Elizabeth Viglone hit a free throw at the 7:06 mark.  Dallas snared the rebound off the next foul shot as DelGaudio scored a layup, but AH would go on a 6-0 run cashing in on multiple Dallas turnovers as Coleman and Zalewski scored to make it 33-13 midway through the period.  Dallas would then get consecutive free throws by Megan Bryck, Viglone, and Molly Walsh cutting it to 33-19.  Houlihan exhibited her finesse around the hoop with a pair of layups wrapped around a drive by Viglone to take a 39-23 lead into the final stanza.

Despite their mounting frustrations, the Dallas coaching staff urged their players to remain focused.  They got that message as they went on a 8-2 run through the middle of the period, trimming it to ten points, 41-31 as Victoria Spaciano and Molly Walsh keyed the offensive spurt.  Dallas was now getting to the basket with three of those being layups.  And they were playing much better defense.  But, as the clock dipped under two minutes left in the game, this one became a parade to the charity strip where 8 of  the final 10 points were scored.  And while there was some drama left as the Lady Comets only converted 4 of their 9 opportunities, it was enough to secure the 46-38 victory.

Abington Heights was led by Caroline Murray and Peyton Houlihan who each netted 13 points.  Madison Zalewksi added 9 points.  Maggie Coleman, Katie Scoblick, and Madeleine Walsh combined to score 11 points.  The Lady Comets hit 3 triples and were 9 of 17 free throw opportunities.

Dallas was paced by Molly Walsh with 19 points.  Elizabeth Viglone, Victoria Spaciano, Mia DelGaudio, and Megan Bryck combined to score 19 points.  The Lady Mounts had 1 trey and were 15 of 20 from the charity stripe.
