EXETER – The District 2 Tournament started off with a bang at Wyoming Area featuring a Girls 4A nail-biter between #5 seed Nanticoke Area and #4 seed Lake-Lehman and a Boys 3A matchup between #3 seed Holy Redeemer and #6 seed Dunmore.

In the Girls’ 3A battle, Nanticoke Area and Lake-Lehman played a tight game throughout. The third quarter saw four lead changes alone as the Lady Knights carried a slim 26-24 advantage heading into the final period.

A defensive struggle for most of the game came continued into the fourth quarter.  It took more than 2:30 minutes for the Trojanettes to score the first points and the Lady Knights would not answer back until the clock dipped under a minute remaining.

In the closing seconds, Riley Baird would find herself at the foul line the one-and-one bonus. She would convert both chances to give the Trojanettes the 30-28 victory. Sarah Salus would get possession of the ball in the final seconds but she was unable to get the tying shot off before the buzzer.

Nanticoke held Salus, Lake-Lehman’s top offensive threat, to just 4 total points. The Lady Knights faced foul trouble throughout the night and had two starters, Lia Keefe and Chase Purdy, foul out with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

The Trojanettes were led Riley Baird with 14 points and Abigail Cullen with 9.

Claire Dougherty scored 12 points, along with grabbing 9 rebounds, for the Lady Knights.

Nanticoke Area will next face top-seeded Scranton Prep in Friday’s Semi-Finals.

The Boys 3A game between Holy Redeemer and Dunmore was a complete turnaround from the earlier game.

The Bucks hit five triples in the opening period in their attempt to pull off the upset. The Royals would keep pace through using their advantage on the offensive boards and some poor ball control by Dunmore to take a 24-21 advantage after the opening period.

In the second quarter, the Bucks struggled to hit their shots as Holy Redeemer carried a 38-27 lead into the break.

Ian Cowder would get Dunmore on the board to start the second half, but that is as close as the Bucks would get the rest of the way.  Holy Redeemer would find their stroke, seemingly converting every chance at the offensive end, as they would go on a 30-0 run to bust the game wide open.

With a 44-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, Holy Redeemer would pull their starters as they secured the 80-43 victory.

Mason Mendygral would lead the Royals with 21 points in three quarters of action. Justice Shoats and Matt Prociak would each tally 15 points in their team’s runaway victory.  The trio combined for 26 of Holy Redeemer’s 33 points in the explosive third quarter.

Cowder would be the only Buck to score double-digits, leading his team with 11 points.

Holy Redeemer will next face #2 seed Lakeland in Friday’s Boys 3A Semi-Finals.
