Hempfield scored a road victory in a match-up with the Penn Manor Comets. The road can be a difficult place especially when a section leading team comes into a team hungry to make its mark in the 2022 season. The Comets battled all night long. Hempfield would open a semi-comfortable lead using its half court trap in the second period. PM would not give in and had a few opportunities late to make the game very interesting. In the end, the Knights walked out of Millersville, with not only a road win, but they find themselves all alone in first place as Crest lost its third in a row.

As is typical with Section 1 contests, the first period is a matter of feeling each other out- seeing what adjustments each team made from the first meeting (70-45 beat down back in Dec.) Neither team would string together minor/major runs. Hempfield’s largest ‘run’ was at the end of the quarter – A Ben Troyer foul shot followed up by a Parker Wolfe layup. Randy Short, 5’9” sn, would nail 2 three -balls in the quarter. Hempfield 13-12 after one.

Penn Manor would go ice cold to start the 2nd stanza. Perhaps some of the cold shooting was due to Hempfield’s half court trap. The Knights would take a 23- 15 lead capped by a Wolfe 3 ball. Short would answer for the Comets with his own triple. Penn Manor would get closer with 2 foul shots by Ethan Benne, 6’4” soph. A jump hook in the lane by PM’s Kamrin Carroll, 5’11” Sn, ended the scoring for PM and the half. 28-24 Hempfield.

After a Short drive, the Knights would explode and ride a 10-0 to take command of the game. Miguel Pena, 6’1” jn guard, and Ben Troyer, 6’3” soph, led the run. Pena hit 2 three-balls plus a layup and Troyer scored on 2 layups – the last a sweet euro step with a reverse. Hempfield 45-34 after 3.

Penn Manor just wouldn’t go away. The Comets pressured the Knights into 6 turnovers in the quarter. PM got the lead down under 10 (47-40) at the 3:18 mark off a layup by Benne. However, Hempfield spread the floor vs. PM’s full court pressure – got a layup or 2 and made some fouls to put an end to any drama.
