Lebanon 52 Garden Spot 48
January 20, 2020

The Lebanon Cedars survived a scare from Section 3 foe, Garden Spot. Both teams used mostly zone defense, which made for a quickly played game. It seemed like the game would come down to Spot’s Big- Andrew Zentner, 6’7” sn – and Lebanon’s lightning quick trio of mighty mite guards – let’s just say 5’9” to be a bit on the higher side for Raylin Pena sn, Marquis Ferreira soph, and Luke Collins soph. However, in a key 4th quarter run, it was the Cedars Bigs- Jean Carlos Gonzalez Belen (7 pts) and Isaiah Rodriguez (4 pts)- that made the key buckets to push the Cedars to the ‘W’ on the road.

The first quarter was all about Zentner of the offensive end for Spot. He had 9 points in the quarter to the Cedars 13. Raylin Pena found the range vs. the spot zone as he hit for 3 three-balls in the quarter. 13-9 Cedars after 1.

The first run of the game belonged to Spot- A Zenter ‘j’, a layup by Jahvar Hammond, 5’9” frosh, a Zenter dunk and 1, and a layup by Nolan Fletcher found the Spartans up 19-13. The Cedars would answer with a 6-0 run of its own. Thomas Andress, 6’1” jn hit a three-ball to end the scoring at the end of the 2nd. 22-19 Spot.

Spot would up its lead to 34-28 late in the 3rd, only to see Lebanon again close the gap. Isaiah Rodriguez would hit 2 foul shots late for the Cedars to close the scoring in the third. 34-31 Spot.

Spot would yet again push its lead early inn the 4th. A Zenter foul shot made the tally 38-31 at the 7-minute mark. The Cedars Bigs started to get inside- drew some fouls on Zentner, turned the Spartans over on the defensive end and keyed the 17-5 run. The sixth and final three-ball by Pena put the Cedars up 45-41 at the 3-minute mark.Spot would hit 2 three-balls late to keep the game within reach, but the Cedars would hold off the late charge to claim the win using a 21-14 advantage in the stanza.

Sidelines: The game between these 2 LL teams does NOT count in the LL standings as Lebanon is in Section 2 and Spot is in Section 3. All LL teams agree to play at least one game out of section/crossover to help with scheduling…LVC’s assistant, Brad Karli was in the stands helping LLhoops with some strategy during the game. It was fun catching up with Coach Karli, who I helped coach when I was an assistant at Etown College…..and we gave away a t-shirt for AD, Marc Schaffer, to find a deserving fan- and we will wait for the LLhoops t-shirt shot in the future 🙂
