Officials week…
Several teams have posted images of officials this past week as the PIAA recognizes the refs work. It’s a tough job. Here is a link to the local official page. The chapter is always looking for new refs. Maybe a pict with captains and refs each game would be appropriate?

Around the LL
Section 1
Hempfield controls Section 1 including impressive wins last week against McCaskey and Lebanon. The Knights have a 1 game lead heading into the “second” half of Section 1 play. McCaskey scored a good win vs. Crest (50-48) on Crest’s home floor. The Tornado is one game off the pace. A key game this week features Hempfield at Cedar Crest (Friday Jan 20) – did we mention that LLhoops is going to live stream this game? 🙂

Section 2
Garden Spot (led by Zachary Uplinger, 5’10” jn, with 20 points – 6 three-balls) beat Warwick (58-56) this past week, resulting in the Warriors being one game behind Manheim Central. Central travels to Warwick this Tues. Manheim Central is led by the scoring machine Trey Grube ( 5’11” sn. 23 ppg). Warwick welcomes back Carter Horst, who is coming back from an injury and an illness.
Section 3
Section 3 is the most competitive section- by far. LS and Octorara are tied for the top spot at 4-1. One game off the pace are Cocalico and Donegal at 3-2. There is one more game to be played in the first “rotation”. The Octorara Braves beat LS (56- 45) and ELCO (63-50) last week. LS’ top guard, Ben Wert, was injured in that game. The Braves feature a 1-2 punch on the offensive end (Zachary Kirk, 19 ppg, and Elijah Hamilton, 18 ppg ). Should Donegal be considered a surprise? Not sure as the Indians were one win away from being in the District 3 tournament last season. The Indians are not very big and have only one player averaging double figures (James Turbedsky 10 ppg), but they get after it on the defensive end. The Cocalico Eagles can make games a grind ‘em out affairs. The Eagles are bigger than most teams (Camden Ochs 6’5” and Chase Stark 6’4″ ). The Section champ could be determined by Octorara @ LS late in the season.
Section 4
Columbia and Lancaster Mennonite are leading Section 4. Has Columbia been a surprise? Maybe. The Tide takes on all comers with some creative scheduling. Coach Glover prepares his team for the bigger stage as they test themselves throughout the season. Case in point, the Tide played 4 games in 4 days – 3 non league – this past week. LMHS has adjusted quite well without its All State performer, Cam Hurst. Hurst is scheduled to make it back later this month. Just as Columbia, the Blazers look at the bigger picture as they try to go back to back to back for a District 3 crown. The Blazers are led by David Weaver, 6’6” sn 12 ppg. Savier Sumrall, 5’10” sn., netted 30 vs. La Anemia last week.
District 3…
Its that time of the year. Here is the LINK to check out the power rankings. Let’s look at the LL teams.
1A – 10 qualify
1A features many private schools, several from Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Linville Hill Christian, coached by Mike Shatzman ex Pequea Valley Coach, won the title last year, and they are currently the top ranked team.
Lancaster Country Day is coming it at 4th.
2A- 4 qualify
Lancaster Mennonite is the top team in this classification, with Antietam coming in at the second slot. Will we see a third rematch of these teams in the finals?
3A – 6 qualify
Columbia is currently the top team. Trinity has a very talented team, and they are 2nd. Hate to look ahead, but it seems that these teams might be heading for a top flight game in the districts.
4A – 10 qualify
Octorara (7) and ELCO ( 8) are currently in the top 10. Eastern York is unbeaten and sits at the top spot.
Aside: Eastern is playing at Columbia January 21st.
5A – 14 qualify
Manheim Central is 2nd behind Milton Hershey. The Barons defeated previously upbeat Fleetwood (2nd in 4A).
Warwick (4),LS (5), and Donegal (13) are in the top 14 as of Jan. 15th.
6A – 12 qualify
Usually the LL has quite a few representatives in this group, but this year only Hempfield (4) and McCaskey (10) are currently in the top 12. Conestoga Valley is on the edge as the 13th ranked team.
LL Tournament
The tournament is only 4 weeks away. The LL will not play off ties for Section Crowns. If teams are tied for the top spot, then they will be called co-champs and seeding for the tournament will be determined by some tie breakers.
